Golden, Colorado
Originally founded as a mining camp during Pike's Peak Gold Rush of 1859, the city of Golden, Colorado is the county seat of Jefferson County and has a population of about 18,000. Golden lies just west of Denver at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, situated between Lookout Mountain and the two Tables Mountains. On January 3, 1871, Golden was formally incorporated as a city.
Golden quickly became a leading economic and political center of the region, so much so that the city was named capital of the federally recognized Colorado Territory in 1862, continuing as such until 1867. As a crossroads and gateway of important roads leading to the mountains, Golden developed into a regional center of trade and industry. By the turn of the 20th century Golden was home to three flour mills, five smelters, the first railroad into the Colorado mountains, Coors Brewery, brick works, and the only paper mill west of Missouri. Coors Brewery first opened its doors in 1873 and currently maintains facilities in Golden. Coors Brewery, a regional division of the world's fifth largest brewing company, the Molson Coors Brewing Company, is the third largest brewer in the United States and the largest single brewery facility in the world. Golden also houses the Colorado School of Mines, a public teaching and research university devoted to engineering and applied science with a special concentration on the development and stewardship of the earth's natural resources.
