Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs stretches out in the shadow of Pikes Peak, the well-known mountain that looms just ten miles to the west. Though dwarfed by that mountaintop, Colorado Springs itself is not exactly a lowly-elevated place; the second most populous city in Colorado lies more than one mile above sea level at its lowest, and markedly higher in other places within the city confines. With a population of over 400,000 and located 61 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs was selected as the Best Big City by Money magazine in 2006. Protected from extreme weather by the Rocky Mountain range, Colorado Springs also enjoys a mild and mostly-pleasant climate, and as such was voted America's Best City by Outside magazine. The Broadmoor Hotel, one of the world's foremost luxury resorts, dates back to 1891 and is still one of the Colorado Springs' top ten employers today.

Founded in 1871 by General William Palmer as an early resort community, Colorado Springs developed into a settlement for those made wealthy by the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. When the gold supply of Colorado Springs ran dry, its agreeable climate and unusually flouridized water lent itself to the advent of health tourism, as people flocked to The Springs to find relief from all sorts of ailments, tuberculosis most prominent among them.

With the onset of World War II, Colorado Springs found a way to help both the country and its struggling economy with the purchase of 25,000 acres for what eventually became Camp Carson. Though the city's commercial prospects once again waned after the war, the Korean War saw soldiers return to Camp Carson in new numbers, and in 1954 Camp Carson was renamed Fort Carson and became Colorado Springs' earliest army post. But the real boon to the community came later in the year, when President Eisenhower chose Colorado Springs as the site for the U.S. Air Force Academy. The city's financial security was then set when, in 1963, NORAD's main facility was constructed in nearby Cheyenne Mountain. In the latter part of the 20th century, Colorado Springs expanded from its military and tourism industries to include high-tech and electronic equipment manufacture. Companies such as Verizon Business, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel contributed to Colorado Springs' industrial vibrancy and viability.

Unfortunately, military installations are one of this country's leading sites for asbestos exposure in the workplace. That, combined with jobsites in the residential and commercial building industries - as well as utilities and power providers such as the Martin Drake Power Plant and the Ray D. Nixon Power Plant - adds up to a lamentable amount of places in Colorado Springs where the risk of asbestos inhalation and asbestos disease is high. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in or near Colorado Springs, you may be at risk to develop certain asbestos related diseases including mesothelioma (a terminal cancer). For those diagnosed with an asbestos disease, the area does have quality medical care, cancer centers, and mesothelioma physicians who can provide treatment.
