Whittier, California

Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County, California, with a population of about 85,300. The city has seen a variety of commercial enterprises, from ranching to oil drilling. Today, Whittier is focused on healthcare and education, and light manufacturing, with top employers including Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, Johnson Controls, and the Southern California School of Health Sciences. Whittier is also home to Whittier College, established in 1896.

The railroad arrived in Whittier in the late 1800s, and industry soon followed as Whittier established a cannery and several mills. Farmers and fruit growers could now transport their crops to market, and in 1901 formed the Whittier Citrus Association, which became known for its "Quaker Brand" citrus fruits. Walnuts also became an important crop. In 1896, the Whittier oil field was discovered, and by 1914, companies such as St. Helens Petroleum, Standard Oil Company, and Brea Canyon Oil Company were producing thousands of barrels a day. Larger strikes elsewhere eventually caused the field's decline. Chevron, the last company to operate the field, turned the land over to Whittier in 1993.In recent years, the city has begun exploring the possibility of reopening the land to drilling. Population growth after World War II resulted in development of many of the orange groves and the economy has become more service-oriented in recent decades.
