Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, with a population of just over 64,000. First settled in 1849, Walnut Creek is a largely residential city with 1,800 acres preserved as open space. Companies headquartered in Walnut Creek include American Reprographics Company and Central Garden & Pet. Service and retail industries make up a large portion of the economy, with healthcare accounting for several of the city's largest employers, including John Muir Health, Kaiser Permanente and HCR Manor Care.

In 1850, California became a state and Walnut Creek was established on former Mexican land grants. A town was laid out in 1860, and officially became Walnut Creek in 1862. Walnut Creek grew slowly in its first century, with fruit and nut growing as a primary occupation until the 1930s. After 1950, the completion of the Broadway Shopping Center and new highway construction spurred population growth. Kaiser Hospital, now Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, opened in 1953, and John Muir Memorial Hospital opened in 1965. Both facilities continue to be key employers for the city. Dow Chemical operated a 28-acre research and development campus in Walnut Creek's Shadelands industrial area. The facility closed in 1993, and the former light industrial area is becoming dominated by medical office specialties.
