Vernon is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Occupying just over 5 square miles, Vernon has the unusual distinction of being founded specifically as an industrial city. Incorporated in 1905, the city has a population of only 112 permanent residents, but is home to more than 1,800 businesses, primarily manufacturing plants and warehouses, which bring approximately 50,000 workers into Vernon each day. Over the years, Vernon's industries have ranged across a broad spectrum, from food packing to fashion and pottery to plastics. Vernon has its own municipal utilities, including electricity, water and fiber optic lines, which provide services to the local industries at a reduced rate. In recent years, Vernon has experienced difficulties with charges of government corruption and faced the possibility of disincorporation, but continues to be a uniquely industry-centered city.
