Van Nuys, California

Van Nuys is a neighborhood of approximately 103,700 residents in the city of Los Angeles, California. First platted in 1911, the area is named for Isaac Van Nuys. Van Nuys became a part of the city of Los Angeles in 1915. Over the years, Van Nuys has gone from a commuter suburb to an automotive manufacturing center. Today, Van Nuys is a diverse community with an economic focus primarily on service and manufacturing sector jobs. Van Nuys also has a sizeable historic district, with many homes dating from the 1920s and 1930s.
Van Nuys was a planned community, with schools and key municipal and commercial buildings established early. Built around the Pacific Electric streetcar line, Van Nuys developers emphasized commuting as a draw to homebuyers, laying the foundations of a car culture which defined the neighborhood for much of the 20th century. In 1945, General Motors opened its Van Nuys Assembly Plant, which was a major employer until its closing in 1992. Van Nuys Boulevard was also the home of "cruise culture,” with teenagers showing off their rebuilt classic autos. The boulevard is still notable for its many auto dealerships. In 1954, Anheuser-Busch opened a brewery which eventually included a factory tour by sky trolley and a Busch Gardens theme park. Also built in 1954 was the Jos. Schlitz Company brewery, which was acquired by Stroh Brewery Company in 1982. Stroh closed its Van Nuys plant in 1989; the Anheuser-Busch brewery is still active. George Lucas founded his special effects company, Industrial Light and Magic, in Van Nuys in 1975 to produce effects for the movie Star Wars.
