Vallejo, California

Vallejo is a city on San Pablo Bay in Solano County, California. With a population of nearly 116,000, it is the largest city in the county. Founded in 1851, Vallejo has long been a shipping and naval center, home of the now-inactive Mare Island Naval Shipyard and the California Maritime Academy. Among the city's top employers are Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park, Touro University, and the United States Forest Service, which has a regional office in Vallejo.
Vallejo served briefly as the state capital in 1852 and 1853, but was ultimately not chosen as the permanent capital. Instead, Vallejo was selected as the site of the Mare Island Naval Yard, which began operating in 1854. By the time of its closure in 1996, the yard occupied over 5,200 acres, had built more than 500 vessels, including the first West Coast-built nuclear submarine, and set a world speed record for building a destroyer - 17 1/2 days from start to launch. During the late 19th century, Vallejo was also a major wheat shipping port. In 1869, the Vallejo Elevator was built. The elevator later became the Starr & Company flour mill, and was acquired by the G.W. McNear Company in 1895. In 1906, Sperry Mills took over and became one of the founding companies of General Mills in 1929. General Mills operated the Sperry Flour division until its closure in 2004. The loss of the flour plant also led to the closing of a California Northern rail line. Although Vallejo has seen economic setbacks in recent years, it is focusing on redevelopment of the shipyard and waterfront, including a ferry service, to help restore the economy.
