Union City, California

Union City is a city in the East Bay section of the San Francisco California Bay Area. Located in Alameda County, Union City was incorporated in 1959 from the merger of Alvarado and Decoto and has a current population of just over 65,500. Alvarado's agriculture and industry and Decoto's railroad access made a profitable combination, and the two towns continued to grow. Today, Union City has a diverse economy incorporating healthcare, retail and manufacturing. Among the city's notable employers are the American Licorice Company and Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.

Union City was founded in 1850, and renamed Alvarado in 1854, following a merger with neighboring New Haven. When Alvarado merged with Decoto (founded in 1870) in 1959, the new city reclaimed the settlement's original name. The region's good soil encouraged farming, and fruit and produce growing were among Alvarado's earliest industries. Staple goods such as salt, sugar and flour were also produced in both Alvarado and Decoto. The E.H. Dyer beet sugar factory was founded in 1879, becoming the first successful beet sugar company in the United States. The factory was operated by Holly Sugar Company from 1926 until its closure in 1975, with a brief suspension of manufacturing during World War II. Pacific States Steel Company acquired the site of a former brick mill in 1938, and built a steel mill which operated until 1978. The site is currently undergoing environmental clean-up. More recent industries include the McKesson Chemical Company (1971-1986) and American Licorice Company, which moved to Union City in 1970 and manufactures a variety of candies.
