Tracy, California

Tracy is a city in San Joaquin County, California. Located in the Central Valley east of the San Francisco Bay Area, Tracy has a population of about 82,900. Tracy was founded in 1878 along a rail line of the Central Pacific Railroad. Though largely residential, Tracy also has an active economic base, incorporating manufacturing, distribution, and healthcare. In recent years, the city has begun to focus on high-tech and "green" industries. Notable employers include a Safeway Distribution Center, a Leprino Foods cheese factory, Deuel Vocational Institution and Defense Distribution Depot San Joaquin.

Tracy's existence can be credited to the railroads. Established by the Central Pacific Railroad, Tracy was partly created from nearby Ellis, whose residents and even buildings were relocated to Tracy. In 1894, moved its headquarters to Tracy. The town grew quickly and was incorporated in 1910. Early industry focused on the railroad and on agriculture. The Holly Sugar Company built a beet sugar refinery in 1917. The plant stopped processing sugar in 2000, and some of the site has been converted for other uses. In 1946, Bechtel Corporation built a tomato processing plant for the H.J. Heinz Company. The plant, one of the largest then in existence, closed in 1998. Owens-Illinois of North America has operated a glass-bottle factory in Tracy since 1962. The city's convenient rail and highway access to the Bay Area and Sacramento has made it a prime location for distribution centers for companies such as Crate and Barrel, Orchard Supply Hardware and United States Cold Storage. Agriculture still plays a part in Tracy, with grapes and hay among the primary crops.
