Torrance, California

Torrance is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Located on the shores of Santa Monica Bay, Torrance has a population of just fewer than 145,500. Originally settled by the Spanish in the late 18th century, the city of Torrance was incorporated in 1921. Petroleum refining and agriculture were important early industries, while World War II brought aerospace and automotive manufacturing to the city. Among Torrance's current top employers are American Honda, Honeywell and Hi Shear Corporation.

Torrance was developed as a planned community in 1912, incorporating industrial and residential areas from the beginning. ExxonMobil's Torrance Refinery was established in 1929 by General Petroleum Company. In 1942, the U.S. Army Air Force built an air strip which later became Torrance Municipal Airport. Torrance soon became a center for the aerospace industry, represented by companies such as Douglas Aircraft Company and Aeronca Manufacturing Company, which acquired Longren Aircraft Company in 1959. Hughes Aircraft Company opened its Electron Dynamics Division in 1967, which operated until 2003, when the property was sold to Boeing. The airport, now known as Zamperini Field, has been home to Robinson Helicopter Company since its founding in 1973. The growing aerospace industry also brought a boom in housing construction to Torrance after World War II. Although somewhat affected by recent recessions, Torrance retains an active industrial base which includes automotive aftermarket products and electronics manufacturing.
