Sunnyvale, with a population of approximately 140,000, is a city in Santa Clara County, California. Settled in the late 18th century, Sunnyvale has gone from a major fruit grower to a bastion of aerospace manufacturing and high-tech as part of California's famed "Silicon Valley." Sunnyvale was a rural, agricultural community for much of its first 150 years. The Spanish, arriving in 1770, established mainly wheat farms. By the mid-19th century, settlers from the east began to plant orchards, and the first fruit cannery was built in 1870. In 1901, the town took the name of Sunnyvale. In 1906, the firm of Libby, McNeill & Libby built a fruit packing plant in Sunnyvale, and by 1922 was the largest cannery in the world. Although the plant closed in 1985, the company is commemorated with a water tower painted to resemble a can of Libby's fruit cocktail. Another important Sunnyvale industry, defense manufacturing, also got its start in 1906 with the founding of the Joshua Hendy Iron Works. The boiler manufacturer made marine engines and armament during World War II, and was acquired by Westinghouse Electric in 1946. With National Semiconductor's move to Santa Clara in the mid-1960s, other high-tech firms soon followed. Companies with a presence in Sunnyvale have included Fairchild Semiconductor, Control Data Corporation and General Precision Systems.
