Santa Monica is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Located on Santa Monica Bay, the city has a current population of about 89,700. Santa Monica has a diverse and colorful history, encompassing amusement piers, aviation, skateboarders and celebrities. First settled in the late 18th century, Santa Monica was officially incorporated in 1886. By the early 20th century, it had become a popular oceanside resort, home to executives, workers and movie stars alike. Santa Monica today continues its tradition of variety, home to businesses ranging from movie studios to mortgage companies. Among the city's top employers are Santa Monica College, MTV Networks, and the RAND Corporation.

Santa Monica began to develop as a city in 1875, when the first building lots were sold. By the 1890s, the city had several hotels, a 4700-foot pier built in hopes of being selected as a seaport for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the city's first amusement park. Several amusement piers were built in Santa Monica in the early 20th century. Today, only the Santa Monica Pier, built in 1909, remains. The Douglas Aircraft Company was founded in 1921, expanded rapidly during World War II, and closed in 1968. The RAND Corporation, an offshoot of the Douglas Company, has been headquartered in Santa Monica since 1945. Although the city experienced some economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s, the city began to revive in the 1980s with a renewed interest in historic preservation and development of arts and cultural attractions.
