The city of Santa Ana is the county seat of Orange County, California. Located along the Santa Ana River, Santa Ana has a current population of about 324,500 in a 27.5 square-mile area. Santa Ana was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1886. First settled as ranch land, Santa Ana today is a diverse city, with active business and cultural districts. Santa Ana began to grow rapidly in the 1870s, with the establishment of a branch of the Wells-Fargo Express Company and the Southern Pacific railroad. Transportation access helped make Newport Wharf & Lumber Company, founded in 1888, a success. The company operated until 1902. The sugar and food-packing industries dominated the early 20th century. In 1909, the Southern California Sugar Company began operations. It was acquired by Holly Sugar Company in 1918, which operated the plant until 1983. The site is currently occupied by an Embassy Suites hotel. Other active companies included the Santa Ana Sugar Company, the Haven Seed Company, and the California Packing Corporation. The Santa Ana Army Air Base was established as a training center for pilots, although the base had no airfield and no flying was done; cadets received pre-flight training only. The base was deactivated in 1946, and later annexed to the city of Costa Mesa. Since World War II, Santa Ana has attracted professionals in the arts and in the high-tech and information industries, represented by companies such as CoreLogic and Powerwave Technologies.
