San Pedro, California

San Pedro is a neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, California. Located on San Pedro Bay, San Pedro has an estimated population of about 78,400 and is home to the Port of Los Angeles, the United States' busiest containership port. First settled by the Spanish in 1769, San Pedro was annexed to San Francisco in 1909. Today, San Pedro is a popular location for movie and television filming, making use of its historical buildings as well as its busy waterfront.
San Pedro established a commercial fishing industry early, and its first sardine cannery opened in 1893. Demand for canned seafood, including tuna and mackerel, grew and in 1917, the French Sardine Company was founded. By 1946, San Pedro's Fish Harbor was the world's premier tuna canning region. Active canneries included Van Camp Sea Food Company, Pan Pacific Sea Food, and California Marine Curing & Packing. In 1952, French Sardine became Star-Kist. The Star-Kist plant was the first of the big canneries to close, in 1984. During the early 20th century, San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles became a major oil transport center. Union Oil Company (now Unocal) built an oil pipeline from its wells in Orange county to its new terminal in San Pedro. The California Petroleum Company built a terminal in 1923 which is currently operated by GATX. Other oil terminals at the port have included Shell Oil, Standard Oil of California (Chevron) and several smaller refiners. Easy access to oil played a role in the Navy selecting San Pedro Bay to house part of its Pacific Fleet from 1919-1940. The Port began receiving containers in 1959 and by 1985 had reached one million containers per year.
San Pedro's history of heavy industry and construction place it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for malignant mesothelioma. Asbestos lawyers may also be able to assist you if you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in San Pedro.
