San Leandro, California

San Leandro is a coastal city in Alameda County, California. Located on the San Francisco Bay just south of Oakland, San Leandro has a population of about 84,900. Settled in the early 19th century as a pair of Mexican land grants, the city has grown from open ranchlands to a densely settled suburb of San Francisco, with a mix of industrial, commercial and residential areas. Notable employers in San Leandro include Kindred Hospital, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, and outdoor outfitters The North Face. San Leandro is also home to a Coca-Cola bottling plant, and has hosted an annual Cherry Festival since 1909.

San Leandro was first settled in 1842. The Gold Rush of 1849 brought an influx of new settlers, and a town was laid out in 1855. The San Francisco, Alameda and Stockton Railroad ran a line through San Leandro in 1865, and from that point agriculture and industry grew side-by-side. In 1886, Daniel Best purchased the San Leandro Plow Works and renamed it Daniel Best Agricultural Works. In 1908, he sold the business to the Holt Brothers of San Francisco. Best's son founded C.L. Best Gas Tractor Company in 1910 and merged with the Holt Company in 1926 to form Caterpillar Tractor Company. Caterpillar continued to make tractors in the San Leandro plant until 1985. World War I and II also brought new industry to the area. Friden, Inc. made calculators and typewriters in San Leandro from 1934 until the company was acquired by Singer in 1965. Maxwell House coffee has been manufactured in San Leandro since about 1940. San Leandro in recent decades has also developed its service, high-tech and warehousing sectors.
