Salinas, California

Salinas, California

Salinas is a city on the Salinas River in California. The county seat of Monterey County, Salinas has a population of about 150,400. Long known for the fruit and vegetable crops which have earned it the nickname of America's Salad Bowl, Salinas today includes tourism, retail and other service industries in its economic mix. Top employers include Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc., the County of Monterey and Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. Salinas is also the birthplace of writer John Steinbeck, who worked in the sugar refinery as a young man, and home to Heald College.

Salinas was formally incorporated in 1874, and named for a nearby salt marsh. During the early 19th century, Salinas farmlands were mainly used to grow grains. Developments in irrigation and the arrival of the railroads in the late 19th century marked a shift to row crops such as sugar beets and lettuce. In 1896, Spreckels Sugar Company began contracting with beet growers and in 1899 began operating a beet sugar refinery which produced sugar until 1985, and continued to be used for storage and packaging until 1995. Other food-processing and grocery-related companies soon followed. Despite labor unrest in the 1930s, Salinas’ agriculture industry continued to grow, and the city grew with it. After World War II, Salinas became more industrialized, attracting businesses such as confectioners Peter Paul, Inc. and Nestle, spice packers McCormick & Company's Schilling division and Firestone Tire and Rubber. Most of these plants closed down during the 1980s, and the city has begun to develop other industries, such as viticulture and tourism, to maintain its economy. Agriculture is still a key industry, producing 80% of the lettuce grown in the United States.
