Pittsburg, California

Located at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, Pittsburg is a city located in eastern Contra Costa County, California and has an estimated population of 63,200. Pittsburg has an extensive history of coal mining and industrial development since the late 1800s. USS-POSCO Industries (a joint venture between US Steel and POSCO of South Korea) and Dow Chemical Company maintain substantial plants in the city and are among Pittsburg’s largest employers. Other major employers in Pittsburg are Los Medanos College and Ramar International.

Pittsburg, originally settled in 1839, was initially called "New York Landing", thriving on fishing and canning industries. Following the discovery of coal nearby, the town became a port for coaling, and adopted the name Black Diamond in 1868. Later, in 1911, the citizens voted to change the name to Pittsburg, after the eastern birthplace of the steel industry but without the "H" for simplified spelling. The steel building industry in Pittsburg was first established by the Columbia Geneva Steel Company. Camp Stoneman, located in the area, was a major staging area for thousands of GIs who went to fight the Asiatic-Pacific operations during World War II and the Korean War. In 1954, the Camp was closed and the property was added to the city of Pittsburg for commercial and residential development. The city has enjoyed continued residential redevelopment growth near its northern boundary, as well as ongoing construction of major subdivisions in the southwest hills.

PIttsburg has a varied history of heavy industry, particularly in coal mining and steel production, as well as ongoing development and construction, making asbestos exposure an ongoing concern. Workers and loved ones exposed to asbestos may be at risk for asbestos cancer. If you were exposed to asbestos in Pittsburg, California and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
