Orange, California
Orange is situated in central Orange County, California, approximately 32 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The city has a population of more than 137,000 and occupies 27 square miles. Incorporated in 1871, Orange was the only city in Orange County to be planned and built around a plaza, which earned it nickname “Plaza City”. Orange is unique in that many of the homes in its Old Town District were built prior to 1920; whereas many other cities in the region demolished such houses in the 1960s, Orange decided to preserve them.
Orange began as a farming community, although it took several years of trial and error for the settlers to discover the most successful crops. The first crops included various types of grains. Many of the farmers then planted grape vines, primarily for raisins. The settlers also tried growing tropical fruits such as bananas, pineapples and guavas, but without much success. In 1873, the farmers began planting orange groves. The town experienced its first growth spurt during the 1890’s (as did many of the surrounding communities), thanks to ever-increasing demands for California-grown citrus fruits, a period some refer to as the "Orange Era". Similar to most cities in Orange County, agriculture formed the backbone of the local economy, and growth in Orange was slow and steady until the 1950s, when a second real estate boom spurred development. Inspired by the development of a region-wide freeway system which connected Los Angeles' urban center with outlying areas like Orange, large tracts of housing were developed from the 1950s to the early 1970s, and this continues today, albeit at a much slower pace, at the eastern edge of the city. Among the city’s top employers are the University of California Irvine California Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, and Chapman University.
