Napa is the county seat of Napa County, California, and the principal city of the Napa county Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1847 and incorporated as a city in 1872, Napa is a relatively old city by California standards. It’s a place with a colorful heritage – a jumping off point for 49ers bound for the gold rush, birthplace of famous leather, and neighbor to some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Occupying 17.8 square miles, Napa is home to approximately 76,000 people.

Napa was once known for its tanneries, prune processing and state hospital. By the dawn of the 20th century, Napa had become the primary business and economic center for Napa Valley. As agricultural and wine interests developed north of the city limits much of the light industry, banking, commercial and retail activity in the county evolved within the city of Napa and in earlier times along the Napa River through the downtown. Napa Glove Factory was established in 1903 and was the largest plant of its kind west of Chicago. Other large employers during this period in Napa were Kaiser Steel, Basalt Rock, Napa Pipe and Mare Island Shipyard. Today, Napa’s workforce is largely white collar and the economy is increasingly based on tourism, as it is known now more for its hospitality, fine food, and luxury hotels.
