Old Menlo consisted mostly of a few general merchandise stores, two or three blacksmith shops, a couple of livery stables, six or eight saloons, and three hotels. The rural flavor of the community remained until the first World War, when, Menlo Park was quickly populated by 43,000 soldiers in training at Camp Fremont, with the Base Hospital and other facilities on Willow Road where the Veterans Administration Medical Center now stands. Menlo Park was reincorporated in November 1927. Currently, much of Menlo Park's economy is focused around companies consisting of venture capital, private equity, financial services, law firms, and other professional service companies. Geron, Robert Half International, Exponent and SRI International are some of the companies based in Menlo Park.
