Martinez, California

Established in 1876, the city of Martinez occupies 12.5 square miles along the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers in the central part of Contra Costa County, California. Martinez was one of the oldest Anglo cities in California before California became a state. The city’s roots can be traced to the late 1840’s, when it served as a ferryboat transit point across the Carquinez straits on the way to the gold fields. Today, Martinez serves as the county seat and has an estimated population of more than 36,700. The city’s downtown is notable for its large number of preserved old buildings.

From a trading post in 1849 to incorporation in 1876, Martinez was a gold rush and shipping boomtown. In 1915, Shell Oil Company built an oil refinery near Martinez, which sparked a building boom in the area. A second area refinery, presently called The Golden Eagle Refinery (owned by Tesoro Petroleum Company), together with the Shell facilities, help make Martinez a major petroleum processing center and port. Martinez's oil refineries can still be seen today from Interstate 680. Besides Shell Oil Company, other top employers in Martinez include Veterans Health Administration, Kaiser Permanente, and Martinez Unified School District.
