Hollywood, home to more than 120,000 people, is a famous district in Los Angeles, California, situated northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Though incorporated as a municipality since 1903, Hollywood does not have its own municipal government; instead it has an appointed official that serves as “honorary mayor” for ceremonial purposes only.

By 1920, Hollywood became world-famous as the center of the film industry in the United States. After many years of serious decline, when many Hollywood landmarks were threatened with demolition, Hollywood is undergoing rapid gentrification and revitalization. The Hotel Roosevelt, which opened its doors in 1927, completed a major renovation in 2005.
