Gardena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Spanning 5.9 miles, Gardena is a small but urbanized community located within the South Bay Basin, 13 miles from downtown Los Angeles. The city of Gardena was incorporated in 1930. At that time Gardena was a small farming community of about 20,000 people, today Gardena’s population is over 58,000.

Gardena is bordered by Athens, Harbor Gateway, Torrance, Alondra Park, and Hawthorne.

The early beginnings of Gardena as a community of homes date back to the 1880s. Civil War veteran Spencer Roane Thorpe is credited with starting the first settlement in Gardena in 1887. Railroads put Gardena on the map following a real estate boom in the Los Angeles area in the 1880s. Because of its acres of berries, the city was dubbed "Berryland”. However, the berry industry suffered at the time of World War I as other crops were supported by the war economy. In 1970, Nissin Foods, a world-wide company based in Japan that makes instant ramen noodles, established its headquarters and processing plant in Gardena and is among Gardena’s top employers.
