Chino, California

Bounded by the Chino Hills to the west, the city of Chino is located near the Arizona border in San Bernardino, California and has a population of approximately 82,000 people.  Since its incorporation in 1910, Chino has been a center for the agricultural industry, which is noted in the city’s motto, “Where Everything Grows”. 

Chino’s early economy was built on the success of the community’s dairy farming, as well as sugar beet, corn, and alfalfa crops.  Companies began to spring up as a result of Chino’s agricultural market, including American Beet Sugar Company and Chino Valley Beet Sugar Company.  In the 1940s California’s fourth state prison, the California Institute for Men, was constructed.  CIM is the largest Level I inmate population within the California prison system.  Chino also houses the California Institute for Women.  From the 1970s to 1980s, Chino gradually transformed into a community with a suburban feel.  In 2008, the city of Chino was awarded the “100 Best Communities for Youth” award for the second time in three years.  Current top employers in Chino are California Institute for Men, Chino Valley Medical Center, and California Youth Authority.
