Carson, California

After many decades as an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County, Carson became an independent city in 1968; it is the youngest municipality in the South Bay region of Greater Los Angeles. In contrast to its neighbor to the east, Long Beach, was incorporated almost a century earlier, in 1888, or to its neighbor to the west, Torrance, which became a city in 1921. Following its incorporation, Carson acted expeditiously to close most of the unwanted facilities that had been located in the city in the past like refuse dumps, landfills and auto dismantling plants. Carson began enforcing strict building and landscaping code and worked to attract successful new commercial ventures to the city. Carson is home to California State University (formerly named California State College).

In 1921,the first drilling for oil was initiated at Dominguez Hill, on the northwest side of the Dominguez Rancho, site of the famous battle during the Mexican-American War called the Battle of Dominguez Rancho in 1846. Soon, a number of oil refineries were up and running, with over 350 oil derricks, tank farms, and sprawling industrial complexes populated the area. The major leases were with Shell Oil Company and Union Oil of California. Subsequently, oil led to a surge in jobs in the community and a subsequent post-war population surge. An average of 300 barrels per day was produced from these wells through 1960.
