Alameda, California

Nicknamed the Island City, Alameda is located on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island, adjacent to nearby Oakland and the San Francisco Bay. The area was originally a marshy peninsula connected to Oakland but in 1902, the dredging of a shipping canal separated the communities and turned Alameda into an island. Bay Ship and Yacht Company, Alameda Hospital, the United States Coast Guard, and the City of Alameda are the community’s largest employers.

Alameda played an important role in the development of shipping facilities and technologies. The newly formed canal brought numerous industrial and shipbuilding companies to the city, such as Alameda Shipyard, Todd Shipyard, and Plant Brothers Shipyard. Bethlehem Steel Corporation had a presence in the city as well, as it owned and operated Alameda Works Shipyard, a shipyard once known as the largest and best equipped in the country. The site of Alameda Works was initially established in the early 1900s by the United Engineering Company; the only building remaining today is the Union Iron Works Powerhouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During World War II, the U.S. Navy acquired land for a Naval Air Station; the site housed two runways, two helicopter pads, and a control tower. The US Coast Guard bought Alameda land during this time as well, turning all of its 67 acres into training center facilities consisting of five barracks, a mess hall and galley, engineering and administration buildings, and an infirmary. Today, the United States Coast Guard maintains its presence in Alameda and is one of the top employers in Alameda, with over 2,300 employees.
