Sheffield, Alabama

Incorporated as a city in 1885, Sheffield is situated on Pickwick Lake along the Tennessee River in Colbert County. The “Center for Shoals” is centrally located between Florence, Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia and home to approximately 9,600 residents. Sheffield’s rich music history dates back to the 1950s when Rock n' Roll music began to sweep the nation. Many top performers, including Cher, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin and Simon & Garfunkel, recorded songs at Jackson Highway Studio and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio which were located in Sheffield. Riverside Park, located on the banks of Pickwick Lake, is a popular attraction in Sheffield offering residents and visitors alike walking trails, fishing areas, boat launches, and more. The town of Sheffield prides itself on being a family-oriented community that offers a small town feel with the conveniences of larger metropolitan areas. There are many colleges and universities located near Sheffield including University of North Alabama and Northwest Shoals Community College.
Named after George Colbert, the Colbert Power Plant is located on Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) Pickwick Reservoir on the Tennessee River. Construction of the plant started in 1951 and was completed in 1965. The Colbert Power Plant has five coal fired generating units and consumes about 8,900 tons of coal a day according to the TVA. Prior to 1980, asbestos containing materials were used throughout power plants including the Colbert Power Plant.
