Gadsden, Alabama
Gadsden is located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains with a population of around 37,300. In 1845, Gadsden received its present day name in honor of Colonel James Gadsden of South Caroline, who later became famous for the Gadsden Purchase. The town is surrounded by beautiful lakes, the Coosa River and Noccalula Falls. In 1991, Gadsden was awarded the honor of “All-America City” by the National Civic League.
In the 19th century, Gadsden was an important center of commerce and industry for Alabama, second only to the seaport of Mobile. Gadsden was an important shipping center for riverboats. During the 1970s and 1980s, Gadsden was the center for heavy industries like Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and the Republic Steel Corporation. Shortly thereafter, these major industries left Gadsden thus driving the city into a major economic disaster. In an effort to turn its economy and social state around, Gadsden kicked-off a redevelopment project, in the 1980s, to renovate and revitalize its downtown area.
