Bessemer, Alabama

The city of Bessemer was incorporated on September 9, 1887, and today it has a population of approximately 28,000. It's nickname is "the marvel city" because the city's growth has been so outstanding. The city is located in an iron ore and limestone district in southern Jones Valley. Bessemer is home to The Bright Star, Alabama’s oldest continuously operated eating establishment and Alabama Adventure, a water and theme park.

Bessemer was named in honor of Sir Henry Bessemer who invented the open-hearth method of steel production. By 1911, iron ore was being mined in the hills, coal was being mined in the north and west, and limestone was also nearby. All of these elements were necessary to making steel. From 1890 through the 20th century, Bessemer was a major steel center. Steel is no longer being manufactured in the city of Bessemer, because there is no longer any ore mining. During the recession in 1907, Bessemer's largest corporation, Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company, was forced to sell stock to US Steel. Until the 1990s, Pullman Standard Company, a railroad car manufacturer, was also located in Bessemer.

Bessemer was the home to many manufacturing job sites, including Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, Bessemer Pipe Plant, and Woodward Iron Company. Exposure to asbestos at these job sites has been a major issue. If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos in the workplace in Bessemer, you may be at risk to developing an asbestos disease like mesothelioma cancer.
