Terrybestos

Some products were so associated with asbestos during the early 1900's that their very names were based on the naturally occurring mineral. One such product was Terrybestos, and it contained potentially lethal amounts of the material. Of course at that time people did not know that asbestos contains toxins that could seriously harm or even kill them.

Miners began to excavate enormous amounts of the mineral towards the end of the 1800's. At that point only the useful qualities of asbestos had been noted. It is very strong, but still maintains the ability to be engineered into any shape or size that is desired for manufacturing purposes. Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, do not damage the material in any way. The vast abundance of the material made it easy to obtain, which therefore made it inexpensive to use. Asbestos even has the ability to withstand and help stop the spread of fire. People often referred to it as a miracle material.

This miracle would end with tragic results when people who worked with or around products like Terrybestos began to get sick. As people inhaled microscopic particles of the toxic material, they would be afflicted with respiratory disorders, such as asbestosis. This disorder made it difficult and painful to breathe, and it often continued to spread and develop into a much worse condition called mesothelioma. There are different types of mesothelioma including peritoneal mesothelioma as well as different mesothelioma cell types such biphasic mesothelioma. This disease affects both men and women and has no cure. As a result, the survival rate is low and there are few mesothelioma survivors.

As the number of reported cases of asbestos disorders grew, public outcry demanded that the damaging mineral no longer be used. However, some manufacturers chose to continue including the hazardous substance in their wares. In order to get away with this, executives wanted to make sure no one was aware of what they were doing. They didn't even warn their employees of the threat, so those ill-fated people were exposed unnecessarily. Protective gear could have easily been supplied for the workers, but instead their health and safety was forsaken.

With asbestos exposure being one of the prime risk factors of mesothelioma, a new chapter in the history of asbestos soon developed - the filing of many lawsuits against the companies that utilized it as a key ingredient in their goods. So many were filed that the vast majority of these companies sought Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection. While this allowed them to escape their debt, it also forced them to create trust funds to provide monetary compensation to the people their products had harmed.
